R. Lee Gordon’s Biography

Part social entrepreneur, part non-profit director, part strategic marketer, part community organizer, in all he is, R. Lee Gordon is a visionary. His constant calling is to create better educational opportunities for African-American youth.

As former director of marketing and public relations for Molly Maid, an international residential cleaning franchise, Gordon supported the marketing needs of more than 500 domestic franchise owners.

In 1999, he co-founded a Detroit-based marketing company that provided strategic marketing solutions and products to more than 175 business owners.

In July 2004, he moved back “home” to his native Brooklyn, New York, to spend time with his beloved, aging grandmother, and to help his sister grow her company, Divalicious, Inc. In 2005, Divalicious was voted New York City’s best party rental company, and featured in New York Magazine.

Gordon returned to the Detroit area in 2006, where he worked as a personal advisor and strategic marketer for a global entrepreneur. During the next two years, he helped develop concepts and companies in the restaurant, retail, entertainment, media, homeland security and technology industries.

Swayed by a deep love for his people and a deeper love for children (just ask his 26-year-old son and eight-month-old daughter), Gordon walked away from a lucrative career, and took “a long leap of faith” to start his own business, UniTee Design. A Black youth education and empowerment enterprise, the company’s programs and products inspire African-American children to “believe, achieve and succeed.” Gordon says his popular RBG “UniTee” tee-shirts are designed to connect today’s youth with African-American history, culture and heritage, and build self-identity and self-esteem. “UniTees” also encourage dialogue, unity, and youth activism.

Gordon insists Black America has all the resources that are required to better the quality of learning for African American children. “We need to just creatively, strategically and actively work together one community, one parent, one person and one day at a time, and, together, we will find better ways to reach and teach our children.”

Recently returning home to organize The 1st National Black TEEN Empowerment Expo (scheduled for spring / summer 2009, in New York City), Gordon still serves as a founder and co-director of The Better Detroit Youth Movement. He has recently been appointed director of The Youth Task Force for The National African American Congress. “My mission is to overcome a faulty educational system by working towards a national youth movement that creates a stronger support system for our children. I know we can achieve this by leveraging the power of information and the value of collaboration among our youth service providers, our communities and our people.”
