- Harder than any fictional gangsta rap, spoken word artists Brotha’s Keepa confronts its listeners with the unvarnished truths about being black in America today. J’malo Torriel and Ed Brittenum are the Memphis, Tennessee duo that make up Brotha’s Keepa, a group dedicated to the enlightenment of Black people, especially young Black men.
Audiences of all ages have been mesmerized by the theatrical and spoken word teachings of Ed and J’malo. Recognized by Clear Channel Memphis as K97 Peace Achievers of the Month for December 2005, this dynamic duo has traveled the nation attempting to spark minds to partake of positivity while taking the art of entertainment back to its consciousness roots. In September 2005, they opened for The Last Poets in Memphis. Recently, Brotha’s Keepa was a featured act during the Tuskegee University / Project EXPORT HIV/AIDS Health and Wellness Black Belt Tour in Alabama. Along with their poetry performances, Brotha’s Keepa also holds theatre camps, coat drives, food drives, youth prison prevention programs and many other charitable events in the Mid-South.
